Directing

I trained, originally, as a theatre director at The Bristol Vic Theatre School, having directed at the National Student Drama Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe.

I then directed at Soho Theatre Company, Kings Head, Bristol Old Vic Studio, in Oxford & Norwich; on postgraduate courses at UEA and Central School of Speech & Drama; rehearsed readings for Paines Plough, Graeae; scratch nights for the fence network, and Script Forums for New Playwrights Trust. I worked as Assistant Director on shows at The Wolsey Ipswich, Northern Stage Newcastle, and Bristol Old Vic. I stopped in 1994 when I took on a full-time arts management role.

My return to directing started in 2016 as I began to work on a long term project  - My Heart is in The East (by Jessica Litwak). This has been a process of slow theatre; partly as the two actors live in Paris and New York, partly owing to the pandemic; but also deliberately, as an antidote to the kick-and-rush approach to theatre making which I was happy to leave behind previously, and to enable a focus on process and engagement – what goes around the show – as much as the show itself.
