Trivial but fun

…According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums, the band’s name was a mondegreen from the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood song, “Jackson“, misheard by frontman Paddy McAloon.[1] The correct opening lyrics for “Jackson” are “We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout“, which McAloon misinterpreted as ‘hotter than a prefab sprout’. However, Allmusic reckons that the prosaic truth is that “an adolescent McAloon had devised the meaningless name in homage to the longwinded and equally silly band names of his late 1960s / early 1970s youth

One response to “Trivial but fun

  1. hi Jonathan and Steve, I was the rather opinionated and emotional audience member sitting fairly close to Jonathan. What I wanted to say was that I thought the whole show was a great idea, and was a tremendous opportunity to deal with important issues that just don’t get looked at enough – the interminable nature of injustice and whether the Israelis are now the sole perpetrators of this etc etc. What I also wanted to say was: it was too long, did not leave enough room for people (especially those who are on the outside of the debate and ignorant of it, eg those who were still saying 10 minutes from the end, what does Shoah mean?). I think there should have been more jokes, and there should have been more context. In short I think it needs to be edited right down, and for some bizarre reason, I think I could help in this. But whatever, I wish you well with a great idea – I thought the having people eating during the performance really works in particular, best wishes, Rick Szur
